What size air conditioner do I need to buy?

The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is measured in British Thermal Units (BTU), and the capacity you require depends on the size of the room you need to cool. If you buy an air conditioner that is too small for the room it will not cool adequately. If you buy one that is too large, the air conditioner will cool the room before it dehumidifies.

Cooling capacity of an air conditioner is measured in tons so one ton AC provides 12000 BTU in one hour.

To find out which size unit is best for the room, divide the size of the room (length*breadth*height) by 1000 . It will give the ton capacity. The table below will make this task easier for you:

Air conditioner Ton requirement calculator / Chart for room

Sl No: L B H L*B*H Ton required
1 9 9 9 729 0.75
2 9 9 10 810 0.75
3 10 10 9 900 0.75-1
4 10 10 10 1000 1
5 11 11 9 1089 1
6 11 11 10 1210 1-1.5
7 12 12 9 1296 1-1.5
8 12 12 10 1440 1.5
9 13 13 10 1690 1.5
10 14 14 10 1960 1.5-2
11 15 15 10 2250 2

Make any adjustments for the following circumstances:

If the room is heavily shaded, reduce capacity by 10 percent. If the room is very sunny, increase capacity by 10 percent.

What is the electrical consumption of the air conditioner per month?

It depends on the air conditioner model you are using and the usage pattern.

The estimated electrical consumption can be calculated by:

Estimated Electrical Consumption = Input (kW) X No. of hours used X No. of days per month X Current Electricity Rate

Why is the room not cool enough even after the air conditioner running for awhile?

It may be due to the following reasons:

1. The indoor fan coil is dirty resulting in weak dissipation of cool air.
2. The outdoor condenser is dirty and not producing cooling refrigerant
3. There may not be enough refrigerant in the air conditioning system.
4. The desired operating temperature is set too high.
5. The air conditioner installed is under-sized.
The proper room size is 10`L X10`W X10`H for 1 Ton Air-con.

In a 10 feet high room, a split type AC should be installed at 7 -8 feet for the best cooling performance. For a window type AC, the best height is 3-4 feet from the floor. If you are fixing the AC very close to the wall or in an airtight room it will trip due to high head pressure, as heat dissipation can't happen. Distance must be more than 900 mm after fixing the air-con and top of the shaft should not be closed.

How to check star rating of an Air conditioner

The star rating is provided for customer awareness by BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency.) Depending on the energy efficiency, air conditioners are rated on a scale of 1 to 5. Higher the star rating, lesser the power consumption.

EER is calculated by :
Cooling capacity (Watts) / Power Consumption (Watts)

For example:

One 1.5 ton AC with 5275watts cooling capacity and 1650Watts power consumption, so EER of unit is 5275/1650=3.1 EER with star rating 4.

EER is calculated by :

Cooling capacity (Watts) / Power Consumption (Watts)
